Research group on Comparative Politics and German Government

Welcome to the page of the research group on "Comparative Politics and German Government". In the following, we would like to provide an overview of our research and teaching, both of which are closely connected in our work.

About the Research Group

Issues we focus on in our research group stretch from the German political system to other democratic political systems in Europe and beyond. We are particularly interested in challenges and dynamics of democratic systems of government in processes of internationalization, European integration and inner-state regionalization. A number of our research projects address the effects of these processes on the effectiveness of governance, democratic legitimacy, and institutional stability. Our research is also especially concerned with governance in multilevel systems and comparative federalism. (Verknüpfung: Research)

Our teaching efforts are geared toward imparting political science knowledge and competences that are grounded in theory as well as relevant for practical applications, thus following the political science credo of a science of politics, and not a political (as in "politicized") science. Students learn to understand, analyze and explain structures, procedures, conditions and effects, as well as performance and problems of democracy in modern political systems. Our educational aim is to help students gain knowledge and competences that qualify them for a variety of endeavors, whether in public or private organizations, for other educational areas (such as teaching) or further research.
