Changing images of Germany in international relations – new volume edited by Jens Steffek and Leonie Holthaus

Few countries have seen their image change as dramatically as Germany: from the militarist Empire dominated by Prussia, over the brutal Nazi dictatorship to the peace-loving civil power of the Federal Republic.

In the contributions to this edited volume, 13 authors from German, British and North-American universities trace the shifts of these external images of Germany. Central to their analysis is the influence that such images of Germany had on the theories of international relations that developed in the English-speaking world. Such theories were often formulated in conversation with the example of Germany, which at times served as role model but more often as an anomaly in dire need of explanation.
