Lecture by Prof. Natalia Chaban: “EU Heritage Diplomacy towards Ukraine – The Battle of Narratives in Global Media”
23.06.2025
On June 20, 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Natalia Chaban from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, to TU Darmstadt. In her insightful lecture, she explored the evolving role of culture and heritage in EU foreign policy, focusing on how cultural heritage is being politicized and securitized in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Prof. Chaban examined competing narratives about Ukraine in international media, especially in the EU and Global South, and how these narratives shape public opinion and diplomatic responses. Her analysis highlighted the dual potential of culture—as a tool for peace and understanding, but also as a target and instrument in geopolitical conflict.
A key takeaway from the lecture was the need for the European Union to adapt its heritage diplomacy to new global challenges, emphasizing interdisciplinary research, digital communication, and the protection of cultural identity in times of war.
