Invitation to the Kick-off Conference of the Research Training Group “Standards of Governance”

2023/11/10 by

We are pleased to invite you to the Kick-off Conference of the Research Training Group “Standards in Governance”. The central theme of this event, titled “Governance Standards: Resilience, Tensions, and Innovation,” will revolve around the challenges and prospects associated with standards as benchmarks for effective governance. The conference will take place from the 16th to the 17th of November at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Standards of good governance provide explicit guidelines for both public and private entities, yet they can also raise complex normative questions, particularly regarding the intersection of standards of governance and democratic self-determination. Throughout the conference, members and guests of the Research Training Group will engage in discussions in five panels, exploring the manifestations, repercussions, and normative aspects of governance standards from various academic perspectives.

The range of topics will include the importance of standards for citizenship and the delicate balance between standardisation and innovation. We will also explore standards in the context of global financial markets and the relevance of global governance standards for local governance.

A major highlight of the conference will be the keynote address by Professor Duncan Snidal of Oxford University, who will speak on “Power and Soft Standards in Global Governance” on the 16th of November from 18:00 to 19:30. Separate registration for the keynote speech is also possible.

Finally, we would like to invite you to our panel discussion on the interdisciplinary perspective of governance standards on the 17th of November 2023, from 15:30 to 17:00.

We look forward to welcoming you for this opportunity to discuss the topics of the Research Training Group.
